Finally – a day to celebrate everything about backup! We know that backups can sometimes be seen as a necessarily evil, but let’s face it – backing up and protecting data is more important than ever. Both for consumers at a personal level, but also for businesses, digital information is more valuable than ever. And the nature of backup is changing – the idea of ‘batch backup’ that businesses have employed for years is going away, with new technologies and approaches for storing and protecting data coming out all the time. It’s an interesting opportunity to reflect on where Quantum has been in the world of backup as a leader in various technologies, and now where we’re going as a storage company.
Storage by itself is not a solution. Neither is a media management application. Nor is an editing application. By themselves, they are just products. But customers don’t want products, they want “solutions”. If you put these products together, you can give the customer what they want…a solution to their problem…provided they all work well together. That’s why we introduced the Quantum Advantage program. It is a program that enables our technology partners to work closely together with Quantum for the sole purpose of creating great solutions in the market. At Quantum, we have long worked closely with technology partners and today’s program launch takes our commitment and support to partners to a whole new level.
In the fast-paced entertainment industry, the technology for both creating and consuming content can shift sharply and quickly. Making the right technology choices, at the right time, with well-timed implementation can mean the difference in moving your business forward or wasting a lot of time and budget fixing bad decisions, or worse, losing the business. These three market trends have the power to disrupt your workflow, but by making a few key decisions today you can transition smoothly in 2015, plus prepare for what’s to come in the future. In Pt.1 of the series we look at a technology that's going to be on everyone's mind at NAB 2015: 4K.

By now I’ve participated in quite a few lab validations with industry analysts, many of them testing the DXi-Series. It has been interesting to see the progression of the DXi as deduplication has evolved to take a more vital role in data center workflows, extending data protection to the cloud. Recently Storage magazine/SearchStorage.com awarded the DXi6900 the Silver medal in the 2014 Products of the Year backup hardware category, adding to the industry recognition the DXi has garnered since its introduction, and highlighting the role of the StorNext 5 file system in the appliance. Industry analyst Tony Palmer with ESG Lab has conducted more DXi lab validations than anyone and truly understands the deduplication marketplace, so he recently put the DXi6900 through its paces in a lab testing.
As you may have heard already, there’s exciting news today in the object storage marketplace: Western Digital Corp., a leader in storage technology, announced that its HGST subsidiary is acquiring Amplidata, Quantum’s object storage technology partner. We’re happy for Amplidata and looking forward to expanded partnership opportunities with WDC and the HGST group. As a reminder, Quantum announced in 2012 that we were leveraging the performance and availability of Amplidata’s object storage technology by embedding it in our Lattus family of unique active archive solutions. Since that time, many Quantum customers have been able to increase the value of their data by extending cost-effective online access to massive volumes (PBs) of information, so let's look at how this announcement is great news for three major reasons.
Quantum's DXi6900 proudly received the Silver Award in Storage Magazine/SearchStorage.com's 2014 "Product of the Year Backup Hardware" category. This industry recognition comes just as industry analyst ESG released the results of their recent lab testing, validating DXi6900’s performance claims. Both the award and lab validation are a big deal for us and reinforce what we’ve already been hearing from our happy customers: DXi6900 is a high performance appliance that is very well suited to the needs of mid-size and enterprise-scale companies as well as managed service providers.
