I consider the attention industry analysts pay to emerging technologies to be an interesting barometer for the market.  Not long ago I attended the Next Gen Storage Summit, where object storage was a key focus, and met with a long list of industry luminaries to discuss object storage and where it is headed. Lots of probing discussions about Lattus, as well as observations about use cases for various industries, that stand to benefit from more cost efficient, scalable and accessible storage.  They have also echoed a sentiment consistently: Demand for capacity growth is real industry wide and there is clearly a mix shift toward unstructured content that is driving this.

In a more recent briefing with Simon Robinson from 451 Research, we discussed Lattus and how it is addressing these challenges. Simon wrote about it in a recent report “Quantum Embraces Object as Part of Shift to Scale-out Storage.”

Simon notes:

“Quantum’s heritage and focus on archiving and retention leaves it well placed to benefit if (or when) the market goes more mainstream. In addition, its support and integration with adjacent products – especially StorNext – will be an important part of the company’s story.”  Very true. In fact, we just revamped the Quantum.com StorNext pages in part to accommodate this evolving narrative.”

He also describes StorNext within DXi as “the perhaps unheralded jewel in Quantum’s crown.” We couldn’t agree more.

I was pleased to see 451 note Quantum’s ‘Strength’ as:

“Quantum offers a good range of capabilities in and around the object storage space for certain use cases and verticals. Integration with its StorNext file system and Storage Manager provides a point of differentiation.”

Under ‘Opportunities,’ Simon notes:

“Quantum’s heritage is in data protection and archiving, making it well suited for the emerging object storage market opportunity.”

As the analysts have warmed to the benefits of object storage, so are our customers.
