I n case you missed the news, last November we released Xcellis, our next generation of StorNext-based appliances. With Xcellis, we re-architected the heart of StorNext solutions—metadata control and high-performance storage—with a new converged architecture that stores user data and metadata in a single array. Xcellis offers everything you expect from StorNext: an open system platform, high-performance streaming, extreme scalability, policy-based migration, choice of storage tiers, and an extensive workflow partner ecosystem. But there are three capabilities that are making Xcellis a hot selling product, particularly for our customers in media and entertainment.

Built-in NAS capabilities

With Xcellis, we’re now offering NAS access out of the box—no need to install additional client software to access the same shared content over IP that you do over Fibre Channel SAN. This means that producers and other staff who primarily access low-resolution proxies, images, scripts and other text documents can connect to the storage directly from their desktops. The ideal use cases include review & approval, DVD authoring, closed captioning & subtitling. The beauty of it is that you can still connect via the SAN for high-resolution editing and use a StorNext DLC gateway for transcode, render operations which need higher-speed IP access optimized for video at the same time other users access via NAS.

Start smaller, scale smoothly

Xcellis offers a converged architecture allows you to start with a StorNext solution suitable for a handful of users and scale up as your business grows, all the way up to the petabytes. No need for forklift upgrades. What’s more, you can scale performance and capacity independently. If you need more capacity, add Xcellis Workflow Storage expansion arrays. If you need more performance, you can add more RAID arrays, or upgrade your Xcellis Workflow Director for more concurrent file systems. Furthermore, by adding one of our secondary storage tiers managed by StorNext Storage Manager, you can scale infinitely with LTO-based StorNext AEL Archives, Lattus object storage and Q-Cloud services.

Embedded applications on Xcellis Workflow Director

Workflows involve so many applications providing media asset management, transcode, render, production automation and more. Now with Xcellis, many of those workflow applications can run directly on the Xcellis Workflow Director instead of on a separate server, saving you shelf or rack space while it saves you money. The embedded applications run in an OpenStack-based, KVM hypervisor with Xcellis dynamically managing the virtual machine workload to guarantee both storage and application performance. At NAB 2016, we’ll be showcasing a broad range of embedded applications in our virtual partner pavilion, including Aspera, Telestream, IPV, FocalPoint Server, CatDV, Metus, Cantemo, and Evolphin.

Xcellis isn’t all we’ll be highlighting at NAB2016. We’ll also be hosting a live demo of multi-stream, mixed workload production, simultaneously editing multiple streams of 4K with Blackmagic, plus VFX rendering and playback with Autodesk, all from a single Xcellis system. We’ll also show how our new partner integrations enable transcode and delivery directly from content libraries based on Lattus object storage, without restoring to online storage first. Finally, we’ll also unveil a new tight archive integration with an industry-leading MAM that enables policy-based migration to the full range of StorNext archives.
